Whiplash is with us,
As everything comes undone.
With no place to hide, and no place to run.
With the rising sun the shadows lengthen,
Each time I eat my hunger strengthens.
As fools crow, my heart weeps.
In this age of innuendo, no one sleeps.
In the wink of an eye, kingdoms fall,
While rich men run and beggars crawl.
Satellites crash and dogs howl.
Fascists preach as millions bow.
Gone are the years of unfettered hope,
Devoured by nightmares of a different scope.
As the walls of social media bleed,
Words of grief in a world of need.
The wicked shout and raise their fists,
And the godly pray in the midst of this.
Where are you God, as the demons glare,
The nation slumps into despair?
Who can stand when the curtains fall,
As normalcy fades before us all?
Send us people who know how to lead,
Who’ve seen the carnage yet still believe,
That right and good are better than life,
Better than money,
And a boatload of lies.
Deliver us from the shadow of death,
To whatever places you think are best.
With the promise of rest alive in my breast,
I confess my brokenness.
With the end in sight, the song begins,
I raise my hands to sing the hymn.
Glory in the highest in the midst of death,
The earth is gasping for its last breath.
“Vengeance is mine,” you have said,
I’ll wait for justice for those who’ve bled.
How can I know what I don’t know,
In the fields of carnage here below?
Deliver me from evil men,
Who think they are you in their own skin,
They kill the weak and bury their dreams.
In this hardest age that I’ve ever seen.
But your glory awakens each day I rise,
In a world of hate and compromise.
You are the shelter I sorely need,
You alone can deliver me.
